Friday Focus: Time Management

One of the most valuable things a business owner can have is time. Time is where ideas are born, business plans created, and deals closed. The most successful business owners, leaders and entrepreneurs have learned to value their time and maximize its potential, you can do the same. The secret to which is by strictly engaging in time management.

The fact is, everyone has the same amount of time each day regardless, what they do with it is up to them. Time is free and omnipresent, yet unfortunately, most undervalue and squander this precious commodity not being able to capture its full usefulness.

The secret to successfully harnessing the power of time, can be found by actively scheduling your day. The goal is to create a simple schedule and follow it closely. With the many distractions we face every day it is easy to be pulled away from our daily objectives, yet thankfully along with these many modern diversions comes a plethora of tools literally at our fingertips to take back control of our time and byway, our direction in life.

The tech we have in our phones, computers and even watches can serve us with good; scheduling apps, reminders, and the ability to multitask, take time management to a whole new level.

The goal is to create a daily schedule and do your best to stick to it. Start small, schedule a beginning and end time for your tasks during the day which can be easily saved on your phone and connected devices, so you never lose track. Also, pencil in that time for the things you may not be as excited to do. How often have we all put something off and maybe used the excuse ‘I don’t have time today’… we all have, but the truth is, we do have time, just never set any aside. And obviously with a task that we don’t want to do, it’s far easier to complete when there’s a reminder, and some time blocked off to get it done.

This is not to say every single hour must be scheduled militantly, but to create a set time to complete a task or event we can become more punctual and efficient in or day to day life. How often are we late to meetings or other daily tasks because we missed an event or a conversation went over time unnecessarily? If we can mitigate that even marginally imagine how much extra time we could have. Time to create, earn and grow.

And yes, we all have unforeseen instances that pop up throughout the day, but when the dust clears, we can fall back on to that system or schedule either later that same day or the next.

It might sound monotonous or bland, but I challenge you to give it a try. You may be astonished to find how much extra time you have in the day once tasks are complete and as mentioned prior all masters of their crafts in business, sports, arts and leadership are masters of getting the most out of their time. As William Penn once said: “Time is what we have most, but what we use least.”
